GST Invoicing Slabs: Inclusive vs Exclusive Prices Made Easy

Last Updated: June 2026 • By Tushar Gupta

For any small business or freelance contractor in India, calculating Goods and Services Tax (GST) is a daily operational task. Understanding how to structure pricing—specifically how to compute GST on top of base rates versus how to extract base rates from a final price—saves valuable time and prevents invoicing compliance issues.

1. CGST, SGST, and IGST Explained

GST is a destination-based tax system split into three categories based on the transaction location:

  • CGST (Central GST): Collected by the Central Government on intra-state supply (e.g., supplier and buyer are both in Uttar Pradesh).
  • SGST (State GST): Collected by the State Government on intra-state supply. (The tax rate is always split equally; e.g., an 18% slab is billed as 9% CGST and 9% SGST).
  • IGST (Integrated GST): Charged on inter-state supply (e.g., supplier in Uttar Pradesh sells to a client in Maharashtra). The Central Government collects the full rate (e.g., 18% IGST) and distributes the state share.

2. Base Rate + GST (GST Exclusive Pricing)

If you quote a price excluding GST, calculating the tax is straightforward:

GST Amount = (Base Price * GST Rate) / 100
Total Price = Base Price + GST Amount

For example, if your service base price is ₹10,000 and the GST rate is 18%:

  • GST Amount = (₹10,000 * 18) / 100 = ₹1,800.
  • If it is intra-state, CGST is ₹900 (9%) and SGST is ₹900 (9%).
  • The final invoice total is ₹11,800.

3. Extracting base price from a final quote (GST Inclusive Pricing)

If you sell a retail product or agree to a flat lump sum contract (e.g., "MRP ₹10,000 inclusive of taxes"), you need to reverse-calculate the base price before GST was added. A common mistake is simply subtracting the rate percentage from the total—which is mathematically incorrect.

Base Price = Total Price / (1 + (GST Rate / 100))
GST Amount = Total Price - Base Price

For example, if the total inclusive price is ₹10,000 at 18% GST:

  • Base Price = ₹10,000 / 1.18 = ₹8,474.58.
  • GST Tax Amount = ₹10,000 - ₹8,474.58 = ₹1,525.42 (Split as ₹762.71 CGST and ₹762.71 SGST).
